Multimedia Journalist | Political Reporter | Cultural Storyteller
I am a dedicated print and digital journalist with a B.A. in Political Science from Lehigh University. I am passionate about telling stories that hold power accountable, shed light on underserved communities, and deliver clear, actionable information to audiences. My experience includes covering Congress, state and local elections, and producing in-depth features on education and community topics. Working across print, digital, and broadcast platforms has refined my editorial skills and enhanced my ability to pursue investigative reporting, immersive field coverage, and nuanced storytelling that connect with diverse audiences. I create multimedia stories that inform, engage, and reach national viewers. The digital content I’ve produced has been featured on MSNBC and on the official platform of the Senate Democratic leadership. POLITICO has also recognized my professional achievements.
I’ve built my career at the intersection of politics and media, gaining experience at the White House, the U.S. Senate, the United Nations, and on Democratic campaigns. This website features select clips and academic work, and I welcome any inquiries for further information!
These stories provide a brief overview of my work and range during my time as a student reporter. They cover topics from political campaigns to community health and feature writing. For additional work samples, please visit the clips page.
Welcome, my name is Sophia Barro, and I am an early-career journalist and digital strategist dedicated to amplifying overlooked voices, interrogating power, and translating complex issues for the communities they affect most. I am passionate about political storytelling across all platforms, from writing to social media, video, and multimedia content. Outside of work, I enjoy music, literature, traveling, and creative writing.
My reporting experience spans breaking news, political fact-checking, and press work with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Coverage has included congressional campaign announcements, Supreme Court developments including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, feature stories on student athletes, and a range of political and community reporting across topics and beats. I continue to refine these skills while exploring multimedia tools to make complex political issues accessible to diverse audiences.
Growing up in the D.C. area and Dakar, Senegal, taught me that every story has layers, truth depends on perspective, and silence can be as revealing as words. Storytelling became my way of making sense of the world and connecting with people. Navigating multiple cultures and languages deepened my curiosity and strengthened my commitment to stories that give voice to those often overlooked.
In May 2025, I graduated from Lehigh University with a B.A. in Political Science, with minors in Africana Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I am committed to using reporting, writing, and digital storytelling to illuminate diverse experiences and hold institutions accountable in an evolving political landscape.
"Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power."
- Frederick Douglass
