Multimedia Journalist | Political Reporter | Cultural Storyteller

I am a tenacious print and digital journalist with a B.A. in Political Science from Lehigh University. I am committed to telling stories that hold power accountable, illuminate underreported communities, and provide audiences with clear, actionable information. I have covered Congress, as well as state and local elections, and produced in-depth features on education and community issues. My experiences reporting across print, digital, and broadcast mediums have sharpened my editorial judgment and equipped me to pursue investigative reporting, immersive field coverage, and nuanced storytelling that resonates with diverse audiences. I am currently based in Washington, D.C.

I’ve built my career at the intersection of politics and media, gaining experience at the White House, the U.S. Senate, the United Nations, and on the Harris–Walz campaign communications team. Currently, I serve as a Digital Fellow on Capitol Hill, where I contribute to social, press, and multimedia strategy while honing my versatility in political reporting. The Capital from Lehigh: Free speech for some? Trump controls press pool

As a young journalist, I have always believed the press is meant to be fearless — asking the tough questions and holding those in power accountable. The idea that no one is above scrutiny is what drew me to study this field in the first place.
But recently, I’ve found myself wondering, what happens when those in power start deciding who gets to question authority? What does this mean for the future of journalism and for all of us who depend on it?
In a shocking move made on Feb. 25, the White H...

About Sophia

Welcome, my name is Sophia Barro, and I am an early-career journalist and digital strategist dedicated to providing coverage that amplifies overlooked voices, interrogates power, and makes complex issues accessible to the communities they affect most. I am passionate about political storytelling across all platforms, from writing to social media, video, and multimedia content. This curiosity also influences my personal life, where I enjoy listening to music, reading literature, and exploring creative writing.

I have a depth of reporting experience that spans local breaking news to political fact-checking to working with the press on lawmakers and fiscal policy from Capitol Hill. I have worked across the spectrum of media, covering everything from Congressional campaign announcements to drafting press releases during the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, to profiling student athletes in feature stories. Beyond reporting, I continue to refine these skills while exploring how multimedia tools can make complex political issues digestible for diverse audiences.

Growing up in the D.C. area and Dakar, Senegal, taught me that every story has layers, that truth depends on perspective, and that silence can be as revealing as words. Moving between cultures and languages deepened my curiosity and inspired my commitment to telling stories that might otherwise go unheard.

During my undergraduate career, I did not pursue a formal degree in journalism, but I shaped my academic path around the conviction that journalism is only as powerful as it is reflective of the communities it serves. My interdisciplinary background allows me to connect the political, economic, legislative, and social forces that shape current events with the lived experiences of the communities most affected by them.

In May of 2025, I graduated from Lehigh University with a B.A. in Political Science with minors in Africana Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and am now based in Washington, D.C. I am committed to using my reporting, writing, and digital storytelling skills to illuminate the experiences of diverse communities and hold institutions and policymakers accountable in this rapidly evolving political landscape. Thank you for reading!

"Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power."
