The Capital from Lehigh: Free speech for some? Trump controls press pool

As a young journalist, I have always believed the press is meant to be fearless — asking the tough questions and holding those in power accountable. The idea that no one is above scrutiny is what drew me to study this field in the first place.
But recently, I’ve found myself wondering, what happens when those in power start deciding who gets to question authority? What does this mean for the future of journalism and for all of us who depend on it?
In a shocking move made on Feb. 25, the White H...

Biography

Welcome, my name is Sophia Barro, and I am an early-career journalist and digital strategist dedicated to amplifying overlooked voices, interrogating power, and translating complex issues for the communities they affect most. I am passionate about political storytelling across all platforms, from writing to social media, video, and multimedia content. Outside of work, I enjoy music, literature, traveling, and creative writing.

My reporting experience spans breaking news, political fact-checking, and press work with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Coverage has included congressional campaign announcements, Supreme Court developments including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, feature stories on student athletes, and a range of political and community reporting across topics and beats. I continue to refine these skills while exploring multimedia tools to make complex political issues accessible to diverse audiences.

Growing up in the D.C. area and Dakar, Senegal, taught me that every story has layers, truth depends on perspective, and silence can be as revealing as words. Storytelling became my way of making sense of the world and connecting with people. Navigating multiple cultures and languages deepened my curiosity and strengthened my commitment to stories that give voice to those often overlooked.

During my undergraduate career, I did not pursue a formal journalism degree, but I crafted an interdisciplinary academic path rooted in the conviction that journalism is most powerful when it reflects the communities it serves.

In May 2025, I graduated from Lehigh University with a B.A. in Political Science, with minors in Africana Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and am now based in Washington, D.C. I am committed to using reporting, writing, and digital storytelling to illuminate diverse experiences and hold institutions accountable in an evolving political landscape.

"Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power."
